Imprisonment and children

The imprisonment of an adult can have a big impact on the children around them. The loss of a role model, a major breadwinner, or carer will affect each child in different ways.

If you are left to care for children there are many questions you might have: How (or what) should I tell them? Should I take them on prison visits?

Please see the links on the left for our tips and advice.

"I have read the book [Daddy's Working Away] which I can assure you was most enjoyable, as well as upsetting. I even shed a tear. I’m not allowed to use a phone to ring my children, not even able to see them on visits since my first arrest. There was a chapter on when you do finally leave prison how things would have changed, especially with my kids, and all I can say is that I'll try to be prepared."
