SPRING APPEAL 2010
This spring you can support Britons imprisoned overseas in a way we have never been able to offer before.
People in prisons suffer from a wide range of different challenges, but it doesn’t have to be this way. By making a donation today you can choose which area of our work you would like to fund; and change someone’s life for the better in the process.
What follows are the stories of three people locked up in very different situations around the world. Their names have been changed to protect them and their families, but their stories are true and sadly typical of what our clients face.
• Jennifer is in prison in Peru. She relies on our grants to buy food and water. The single bowl of rice provided by the prison each day was so lacking in nutrients that she lost several stone within months of being there. With our help her weight will soon be stable, but she will need much more if she is to stay healthy. No one else is prepared to help her.
• Daniel is in Japan; he’s the only British person in the prison. He spends long periods locked up in a small cell, totally alone. This will be his life for the next nine years. The only thing to distract him from the boredom and loneliness are the books, newspapers and newsletters he gets from Prisoners Abroad. These simple things are what keep him going. He says without them he would lose his mind.
• Three months ago Peter was arrested in Central America. He has no idea when his case will be heard. In the meantime he will need to buy a mattress, he will need money to rent some floor space in a cell, he will need to buy his own food and water. He will need help from Prisoners Abroad’s volunteer translators to understand legal documents essential to fight his case. His parents will need expert help and advice from our Casework team. If he’s found guilty he faces a mandatory sentence of eight years, and he will need our support for all of those.
Make a donation today, and you can decide how your money is used. Jennifer, Daniel, Peter and the thousands of other people like them in prisons around the world desperately need your help.
