Children | Other useful organisations and publications

There are many local organisations around the UK offering a range of services, such as support groups, drop-ins, children’s activities or resettlement services. Although they are targeted at family members whose relative is detained in the UK, there may still be aspects of their services you could benefit from. Please download this map (file size: 117KB)showing the organisations we are aware of – if you know of any others please let us know so that we can add them to the list.

The organisation Holiday Endeavour for Lone Parents (often known as HELP) runs high quality, low cost holidays to any lone parent family. Please contact them on 01302 728791 for more information.

Action for Prisoners' Families in the UK has a DVD pack called 'Homeward Bound' which discusses the release and return of a person into the family following imprisonment - the DVD is of a play in which one of the characters is a child of approximately 10 to 12 years old.

APF also has a pack of leaflets aimed at the partners of prisoners, covering the following topics - Sent to Prison; Keeping in Touch; Living with Separation; Telling the Children; Preparing for Release. These leaflets, and the DVD mentioned above, are available from the APF website (go to the publications section - you may have to scroll down this page to find them).

The British organisation Care for the Family have published a book called "Daddy's Working Away" which is written by and for UK prisoners. However, some of the issues discussed might be helpful to overseas prisoners. Caregivers of children in the UK may also find it useful. This book is available from the Care for the Family website.

Our website has a list of books and novels aimed directly at children of many ages who are affected by imprisonment.

Please also refer to the Prisoners Abroad 'Handbook for Families and Friends' for a wide-ranging list of organisations which do not specifically deal with children and imprisonment, but are specialists in many issues which children and carers may experience.
