Prisoners Abroad’s Work Preparation Programme
The Work Preparation Programme (WPP) is a project which supports ex-prisoners returning from abroad by helping them to find work, training, volunteer and apprenticeship placements.
The overarching aim is for individuals to gain an understanding of the UK job market and to identify how their skills, qualifications and employment history can be transferable. The programme supports people through a difficult transition period, helping them to become part of society again by providing them with the tools required to secure a livelihood. Support is tailored to individual need, and delivered through:
Job Coaching 3 x weekly closed group work sessions and 1:1 sessions:
- Identify personal skills and qualities – such as communication, reading, writing and any other transferable skills or experience that would be attractive to a potential employer.
- Write CVs and disclosure letters
- Prepare for interviews – showing clients how to present themselves, what to expect, potential questions.
- Build motivation and confidence – many people come back with a great deal of anxiety, especially if they have been incarcerated for many years, and are not familiar with the modern world. It’s important to help build confidence so they feel ready to engage in the process of employment, and to step out into the world and interact confidently.
This is Adrian, a former service user, who runs the WPP programme.
