How you can help | Volunteering

Offers of help on a voluntary basis are always welcome. Opportunities include helping out in the office, becoming a pen-pal to a prisoner overseas, sending Christmas cards, or translating documents for a prisoner. Please have a look at this factsheet that details the different ways you can help us as a volunteer.

Prison Visiting

Most prisoners welcome visits of any kind, even from complete strangers, and so many people choose to support Britons held overseas by visiting prisoners, either whilst away on holiday, or if they are resident in a country. Whilst we do not have a formal prison visiting programme, we have prepared a handbook to serve as a practical resource on the issues people may face if they choose to visit a prison. If you are planning a prison visit, we would also appreciate if you would let us know. We can let you know of any issues with the particular country you are visiting, and you can help us by informing us the latest developemnts with either an individual prisoner or a particular prison. We are always looking for ways to improve the information we have on the prison conditions of countries, and would be grateful for any updates you could provide. As a prison volunteer we would also be interested in meeting with you if you were ever in London. If you are interested in registering, please complete a Prison Visiting Scheme registration form. We will keep your details on record, but we will not share your personal information with anybody else without contacting you first. Completed forms should be emailed to volunteer@prisonersabroad.org.uk, or sent to the address shown on the form.

If you wish to visit a prison whilst on holiday or temporarily working in a country the best way to find out if this is possible and the practicalities involved is to contact the British Embassy / Consulate local to that place. Contact details for all the British Embassies / Consulates worldwide can be found on the website of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Pen-pals

Our pen-pal scheme is a vital part of combating the isolation felt by prisoners. Wherever possible, we try to match pen-pals with similar interests. Our clients range in age from 18 - 70 with most people in their 30s or 40s. The vast majority are male. If you are interested in becoming a pen-pal, please have a look at our pen-pal page.

Translating

We are sometimes asked to translate documents for our clients, and are always interested to hear from keen and competent volunteer translators. We will not ask you to translate documents which form part of the legal process, but you may be asked to translate, for example, correspondence from a lawyer or prison regulations. If you think you might be able to help us, please download and complete the following registration form.
