Prisoners Abroad received a fantastic £20,000 from the National Lottery Awards for All to help us in the delivery of our family service for the relatives of British people in prison overseas.

Our project was made possible thanks to #NationalLottery players and this funding will help with the provision of support groups delivered by volunteers in eight regions across the UK as well as national information sessions held online. The project will bring people together to build strong relationships in and across communities: namely our community of families with a relative in prison overseas, and our community of support group volunteers.

A support group volunteer recently told us: ‘the Prisoners Abroad family service is a community that no one wants to be a part of’, but it is so important that it exists. This project will be centred around building and maintaining supportive spaces for this community experiencing the trauma of having a relative in prison overseas.

As the family member of somebody imprisoned in the USA wrote recently:

As families of those in custody in a distant land, we are often left with a maelstrom of conflicting emotions that might include guilt, anger, shame and confusion. The opportunity to unpick and share those emotions with others in a similar position is invaluable.
